Don’t use the “R” word.

Ever wonder how many New Year’s Resolutions are kept? I’m Susan Levy, founder of The Well-Fed Heart, and recently I wondered just that. So I looked it up on the Web and discovered that only 8% of Americans achieve their New Year’s Resolutions. In other words, 92% don’t. Almost half don’t even make it through January!

Small steps work

That’s why we suggest you don’t use the “R” word if one of your goals is to improve your heart health. Instead, think in terms of small steps you can take toward that goal.

  • - For instance, a goal to lower your cholesterol might begin by eliminating one fast food meal a month.
  • - Walking at least 30 minutes three days a week could support a goal to lose weight.
  • - Or, for the sake of your heart, you may commit to a vegetarian meal once a week.

These changes don’t have to be drastic or overwhelming. No change is too small, each is a powerful action that contributes to a healthier you.

Add more steps gradually

And when you’re ready for more, here are some other small steps you can take:

  • - Compare product labels thoroughly. That’s the best way to learn which products have too much added sugar and saturated fat.
  • - Sit down to dinner with your family for one meal a day on most days.
  • - Have at least two fish dinners a week.
  • - Add one new whole grain to your diet.
  • - Eat more fiber.
